![]() ![]() ![]() Now that you've completed your Web page, you're ready to publish, right? NO! You couldn't be more wrong! Assuming you've taken a look at your Web page with your browser, and are satisfied with the way it looks, you have only looked at your Web page the way only a percentage of the Internet population would look at it. Use as many of the different web browsers as you possibly can to assure yourself of the best page for the masses. HostingYou have three options for hosting your web pages: Free hosting, local hosting and remote hosting. If you'd like more information on these options, check our hosting page. PublishingBefore you publish your page, you should know what type server your host uses — most Internet service providers use a Linux-based server with Apache. Publishing is the simplest part of establishing your presence on the Web. There's a multitude of Internet providers who are willing to take your HTML files and make them accessible on the Internet. Normally, this will be at an additional cost over your basic service, but some ISPs do provide a minimal Web presence (about 50 Kb) as part of their basic service — but not using YOUR virtual domain name (critical to business websites). Since you are viewing this page, you have an Internet connection and you should begin with your own ISP. If this proves unsatisfactory to your needs, look at other Internet providers servicing your area they will normally have a pricing policy page available to let you know what services they provide and at what cost. If you find a provider, you will merely FTP your files to their server. Piece of cake! AdvertiseKevin Kostner was promised "If you build it, they will come." You are NOT so lucky! Getting people to come to view your Web page will be the most difficult thing for you to do! E-mail your friends and have then view your page and, if appropriate, add a link from their websites to your website. Then let the worldwide search engines know that you are online and contact Yahoo and go through their New Web page registration. Data Koncepts utilises a powerful search engine registration tool with the ability to schedule automatic "refresh" registrations. If you lack such a tool, it's a daunting task to perform this tedious work across the world's search engines and directories. Don't forget, the professionals at Data Koncepts have the knowledge and the tools to make you look professional, too! Don't stop here!Once you've learned the basics, go on to learn about CSS (cascading style sheets) so you can improve your webpage formatting. The way to think about it is that the HTML provides the content while your CSS provides the formatting. JavaScript is the next advance for you. This client-side scripting has been in use for many years and is the basis (along with CSS) for DHTML (Dynamic HTML). Yes, web pages can move objects, make them disappear and reappear again and so much more. You can get scripts at Hotscripts.com — learn from them but don't fall into the trap of providing "glitz" for the sake of the "glitz." Provide useful content! [Note: Avoid VBasic as this limits you to visitors using IE AND knowledgable visitors will have their scripting turned OFF for security reasons.] PHP is the server-side script of choice (A$P being Micro$oft's offering) and is widely supported. With PHP, you can assemble your web pages dynamically in response to the visitors inputs. PHP also offers good integration with servers to provide better security, forms (orders) processing and, yes, Hotscripts.com has some nice PHP scripts, too! Go back to: |
