Now a banana republic! Freedom Lost! Freedom!

Introduction

If you are reading this page, you must be interested in developing your own Web page. You are looking for a place to begin learning and preparing to begin this task. My intent is to provide you with the basics as well as pointers to some of the excellent tools and other sources of information available.

What this tutorial will NOT do is to magically endow you with 10 years experience in graphic design, website design, website promotion, server-side and client-side scripting languages or even style sheets. Yes, once you learn the basics, you'll be well armed to progress down this path — but learn the basics first and learn them well!

While there are a number of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML generators available, as a rule, they are ALL terrible. So, if you choose to use one to simplify text entry, be aware that you MUST know enough HTML to correct their errors with proper HTML code.

What Is Your Goal?

The first consideration is the reason for generating your Web page.

Personal

Is your reason to create a Web page is to tell jokes, share your travels (or dreams of travel), or just tell your life story, then this information is designed for you. You might even learn something which could make you want to expand your capability to generate Web pages.

Small Business

If you operate a small business, the Internet's Web pages offer you the greatest benefit — you can reach the vast population of the Internet with your page to:

  • Sell
  • Advertise
  • Inform
  • Conduct a Survey
  • Collect Data
  • ...

A website will put you on a par with major corporations in terms of your online marketing ability — if done correctly, you can even present yourself better than they do!

For you, these pages will give you the basics and offer sources for the more advanced techniques.

Large Business

If you own (or are employed by) a large business, the same things are available while the breadth is likely to expand — to fill their own server! However, it is more likely that large business presence on the Internet is more concerned with their image than with the mundane tasks of conducting business. :-)

Target!

Know your target audience!

Know who they are, what they want from you,
their language (and slang) and where they are.
